Despite tough competition, it is still the best you can buy

Astra is placed in the small family hatchback class which is a clustered category with some very fine ones in the line-up. However, with its facelift in 2015 Astra has proved itself a capable car with everything installed in it which is the need of the present owner.

The older one was a big car with many faults, but the present models certainly changed the image in the market. There is good space inside but you cannot guess until you enter as from outside it gives a smaller impression.

It is a front wheel drive and this mode is common throughout the range. At present, there is an excellent range of engines, body styles, and gearboxes. One thing to be very careful about is the details with every trim. You have to dig in for choosing the one that fits your need.

There are some trims made for the company car market and there are features installed according to those criteria. So moving up the stairs doesn’t mean there will be an increase in the tech side necessarily.

A vast range for the Engine side

Vauxhall Astra is an affordable vehicle with eight engines in total.

Petrol engines:

The petrol side kicks off with the 1.4-liter engine with 99bhp. This one will not be a fun to drive as it needs a hard pull from the acceleration side to make a reasonable move. This is the four-cylinder version which also comes in a turbocharged version.

A better one is the three-cylinder 1.0-liter petrol engine with 105bhp which gives a better pull but still it is not the one which you will prefer for hilly journeys and the turbocharged 1.4-liter petrol which comes in a 123bhp or 148bhp.

All these are good to give you a time same as some leading hatches of this category. If you are after more power go for the 1.6-liter and you will reach the top level for sure.

Diesel engines:

For cheapest running cost diesel is a good choice. The three diesel engines meet this requirement the best. The base engine gives 108 bhp with not a bad performance at all.

Moving up gives 134bhp which is good not for the speed, also for the MPG returns. The 158bhp is speedier and powerful but over here, the economy suffers.

How it is to ride in

Vauxhall Astra comes with a comfortable ride that is a little firm but still, it will give a nice environment inside the cabin. There are however clear signs of what is going around outside and under the wheels but there is no prominent vibration inside that can disturb the peace.

One thing to consider is that changing the wheel size will have no effect on road performance so wasting money on this side is not a good idea.

Handling is even more pleasing

This machine is always happy to change directions and change the scene often. There is a very little body roll but it readily disappears not having any negative effect on your driving experience.

The body is well in control and you will feel as the car is engaged in giving you a perfect journey. The steering may seem to be a little problematic but I think when you are used to it, there will be a good proportion of performance.
